The Psychology of Colour

Colour is everywhere in our lives, but most of us rarely think about how it affects us. Researchers have found that colours can influence our emotions, behaviour, and even our physical responses. This field of study is called colour psychology.
Red is one of the most powerful colours. Studies show that red can increase heart rate and create a sense of urgency. That is why it is used in warning signs, sale labels, and emergency vehicles. In sports, teams wearing red have been found to perform slightly better than those in other colours in some studies, though scientists are still debating the reasons.
Blue is often associated with feelings of calm and trust. Many banks, hospitals, and technology companies use blue in their logos and interiors. Research suggests that blue environments can reduce stress and help people focus. However, blue is also linked to sadness in many cultures — hence the expression 'feeling blue'.
Green is strongly connected to nature and has a relaxing effect on many people. It is easy on the eye because the human eye has more sensitivity to green wavelengths than to other colours. Green is used in operating theatres and rest areas to help people feel calm.
Yellow is associated with energy and happiness, but too much yellow can cause feelings of anxiety. Some studies have found that babies cry more in yellow rooms.
Cultural differences play an important role in colour perception. For example, white is associated with purity and weddings in Western cultures, while in some Asian cultures it is associated with mourning and funerals. Similarly, red symbolises luck and prosperity in China, whereas it can represent danger in Western contexts.
The effects of colour are not always the same for every person, and researchers warn against oversimplifying colour psychology. Personal experience, culture, and individual differences all play a role in how we respond to colour.
